Toxicity - a phantom disease?
Toxicity has become a major health issue. Many diseases are being blamed for ill-health when, in fact, toxicity is really the culprit, eluding most health care professionals as they are not trained to recognize it.
The longer toxicity remains unnoticed, the worse the symptoms can become.
Although most health care professionals may not fully understand the symptoms, there is a growing number who are fully aware of the impact of toxicity.
“In my experience, almost all dis-eases are a result of Chronic Toxin Overload (CTO).” - Dr. Tom Moorcroft, DO of Berlin, Connecticut.
The misleading diseases are finally being uncovered. Modern medicine and science are just beginning to realize and reveal how toxic substances can be instrumental in the cause of failing health.
“The #1 cause of disease is the accumulation of unnecessary wastes that are not properly eliminated, resulting in poison retention and accumulation and subsequent health problems. Your body was designed to support optimal function.” - Dr. Elson Haas, MD of San Rafael, California.
Multiplicity of toxins
The problem of toxicity is compounded by the retention and accumulation of more than one heavy metal or toxic substance. The impact can be devastating. Yes, some people appear to handle it, but the reality is that no-one can for long.
Dr. Hal Higgins, DDS, MS of Colorado Springs, Colorado wrote, “Combination of substances in toxicology can be greater than the sum of the parts: with lead and mercury, for instance, a toxicity rating of 1 for each mercury and lead equals not 2, but 60 – when combined.”
We are all exposed to multiple sources of toxicity. Over a long period of time, this will result in an extensive accumulation of toxins, and a compounding effect on human health. Toxins reacting with each other create an even greater negative impact.
Dangers of multiplicity on accurate diagnosis
Dr. Tom Moorcroft, DO of Berlin, Connecticut outlines the confusion that health care professionals have when faced with clusters of symptoms from toxicity.
“Today, people are bombarded with multiple toxins at all times. Because people are no longer getting sick from one or two toxins, but rather a myriad of toxins, doctors often are unable to isolate a single cause of illness and erroneously believe it is all in their patient’s head.”
The question is: are you experiencing a disease process or are you suffering from chronic toxic overload?
Toxicity can be deceptive
Toxicity symptoms mimic those of many common diseases.
“Biotoxicity symptoms also can mimic those of certain autoimmune diseases, such as psoriatic arthritis, celiac disease, irritable bowel syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis.” - Dr. Gary Kaplan, DO of McLean, Virginia.
It is just now being understood by many healthcare professionals that toxicity has an extremely widespread effect on human health conditions.
“Auto-immune diseases are conditions where the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues, rather than a foreign molecule like virus or bacteria. This happens when something confuses the immune system. Increasingly, that “something” appears to be the enormous load of environmental toxins to which we are all exposed.” - Dr. Mark Hyman, M.D. of West Stockbridge, Massachusetts.
Dr. Douglas Kerr, M.D., Ph.D., a professor at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and author of “The Auto-immune Epidemic”, is confident that toxins are causing disease: “There is no doubt that auto-immune diseases are on the rise and our increasing environmental exposure to toxins and chemicals is fueling the risk. The research is sound. The conclusions, unassailable.”
Toxicity can be pervasive
Toxicity can not only increase the impact of many conditions but can even trigger diseases themselves.
“Toxic metals can cause or contribute to a long list of diseases including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and other brain and neurological disorders. While the medical establishment recognizes the acute toxicity that comes from high levels of metals in your body, far more people suffer the adverse effects of low-level, chronic exposure.” - Dr. Joseph Mercola, DO.
Mercury is one of the most toxic of heavy metals and has been linked to many health issues.
“The toxic effects of mercury are spread across a broad spectrum of diseases including autism, Alzheimer's disease, ALS, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, neurodevelopmental diseases, nephrotoxicity, and cancer.” Dr. Robert Nash, M.D. a practicing neurologist and the Chairman of the American Board of Metal Toxicology.
Another effect of mercury is Candida (see "The Candida Mercury connection").
“I do know this, if you have high mercury levels and you don't fix this problem, you will never get rid of your Candida."- Dr. John P. Trowbridge of Humble, Texas, in his book “The Yeast Syndrome”.
Toxic environments and autism
Sonya Doherty ND, a Naturopathic Doctor, specializing in Autism Spectrum Disorder, draws attention to startling evidence of the environment’s role in autism (see "Autism and Toxicity - future generations"), contained in a ground-breaking study at the University of Texas in 2009.
The purpose of the study was to determine if the proximity of mercury pollution in 1998 was related to autism prevalence four years later, in 2002. Dr. Doherty stated that:
“The findings showed that for every 1,000 pounds of industrial release, there was a corresponding 2.6% increase in autism rates and a 3.7% increase associated with power plant emissions. For every 10 miles from industrial or power plant sources, there [was] a decrease in autism rates.”
Why toxicity remains unrecognized by most mainstream health providers
The health community can be slow to take on new innovations. For example, the true cause of duodenal ulcers and their cure were discovered by two Australian researchers in the early 1980s, but it wasn’t until 1994 that the cure was adopted by the health community. Toxicity is still waiting to be recognized.
“The study of toxic metals is part of nutrition and toxicology, areas not emphasized in medical schools. For this reason, these important causes of disease are accorded little attention in conventional mainstream medicine.” Dr. Lawrence Wilson, M.D., of Prescott, Arizona.
Most physicians are not trained to ask questions about patients' work practices or environment regarding toxic chemical exposures and especially heavy metals. They are not understanding the source of the symptoms and why they are occurring in the first place.
Benefits of multi-dimensional diagnoses and treatment
There are definite benefits in adding an environmental dimension to the diagnosis of health problems. Dr. Albert F. Robbins, DO of Boca Raton, Florida draws attention to the importance of this, explaining that many chronic illnesses are either caused or aggravated by hidden environmental factors.
“Without knowledge of these potential environmental offenders, one would not look for or address them. When causative agents of disease are not discovered and removed, chronic illness may progress, and irreversible disease may occur. Many chronic illnesses result from multiple environmental triggers working over time. The nature of complex illness is that it arises from multiple causative factors. Environmental factors are sometimes completely overlooked in the search for causation.”
“Physicians generally do not look for environmental causes of chronic illness, primarily because they have not been trained to do so.”
If you do not see good results from the treatment you are receiving for your condition, you may be suffering from toxicity accumulation. Is your body being burdened by multi-chemical exposure, especially heavy metals? You can confirm this to be true or not by being tested for toxic substances, such as heavy metals. If you are curious about what could be causing this toxicity, we have prepared a Toxicity Questionnaire to help you.
“Your body stores heavy metals because it cannot neutralize them.” - Dr. Joseph Hickey, MD of Head Island, South Carolina.
“Heavy metals can explain most of the previous unknown origins of disease. The intelligence of your body tries to protect you from these harmful toxic substances by storing them in your cells to remove them from circulation.”
The next step
If you have accumulated a high level of toxicity, then detoxification is the natural route to regaining your health.
“I believe that the process of detoxification is the missing link to clear acute and chronic diseases out of the body and to rejuvenate the body and prevent such chronic diseases as cancer, cardiovascular problems, arthritis, diabetes, and obesity.” - Dr. Elson Haas, MD of San Rafael, California.
“The problem is if an underlying cause of your pain or illness is heavy metal toxicity and your treatment plan does not include a detoxification regimen, your overall recovery is very likely to be incomplete and far slower than it needs to be.” - Dr. Gary Kaplan of McLean, Virginia.
The human body is amazing at recovering when the internal environment is clean, and health can return.
“Given the proper environment, your body has the power to heal and return to its normal healthy state.” Dr. Elson Haas, MD of San Rafael, California.
Natural strength is the outcome of detoxifying your body, strength that it needs to allow it to heal itself.
